Is a holistic, healthy lifestyle the absence of illnesses or daily routines that help avoid illness?

When life constantly evolves, demands, and challenges our daily existence, putting ourselves first may seem unrealistic and selfish. However, the more tasking life becomes, the more critical it is for each individual to practice holistic health.

I know making time for oneself is usually the last thing on most people’s agendas. Family, careers, and other extraneous aspects of life demand our full attention without ever leaving room for personal time, care, or, at times, even a moment of peace.

What if I tell you all that a healthy lifestyle is indeed accessible to anyone who actively seeks it?

Of course, there must be a plan for exercising our right to self-care and mindfulness, which requires an intentional level of self-awareness, nurturing the self as much as we do all of the demanding factors in life.

Holistic health emphasizes a balanced approach to living focusing on significant aspects of life such as physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing. Research highlights the importance of this approach, including, but not limited to, our environment, physical and emotional well-being, spirituality, and the two most perceived key elements of health: nutrition and exercise.

While we have all been taught to push forward and develop an effective approach to managing life, the balancing act at the center of it all is often underestimated by us all.

Nutrition takes a back seat to life’s demands, and we give into the fast food craze surrounding us for convenience. Consuming a variety of whole foods—healthy fats, fruits, protein, whole grains, and vegetables—is essential for optimal body function.

We tend to move so fast that even proper hydration is neglected. Yes, water has no flavor, but the human body is 70-80 percent water, and just like a fish, humans need it for survival.

If you don’t like plain drinking water, then infuse it with your favorite fruit. So, drink water to stay afloat (no pun intended), and be healthy; don’t allow your body to be in a drought.

We all know physical activity is good for our overall health; however, we sometimes neglect to move as life evolves. Movement is the key to survival; there’s no right or wrong way to exercise as long as we follow these two simple rules…do what brings you joy, as there is no one size fits all when it comes to movement, and do it for as long as you physical can but don’t forget to add some level of challenge to wake up your body cells and induce the release of Oxytocin aka the happy hormone.

Please remember to always be mindful, take in the moments of life that real and meaningful, and find joy in the simplest things that life has to offer. Being present in the moment is the most significant act of self-care you and I owe to our bodies, our minds, and our overall health.

Daily healthy routines turn into lifelong habits, and our habits define and create our health status.

Stay mindful! 🧘🏽‍♀️
